Blessed to be a Blessing
My nightly prayer always starts with the same words, “thank you, Lord, for the many blessings you have given me.” Each morning, my prayer starts similarly because I feel extremely grateful and thankful to be on the receiving end of the Lord’s blessings. But, those who receive a blessing from the Lord also have a responsibility.

How many of you have a shirt that says, BLESSED? You see these graphic shirts everywhere, and I love that we can wear our faith on our chest. I feel very blessed in a lot of areas of my life, and I’ve often asked the Lord why He is blessing me. I look around me and see so many people who are in need, and I start to feel guilty that I’m blessed.
Blessed to Be a Blessing
While reading Genesis about Abraham, I got a glimpse of how the Lord works.
Genesis 12:1-3
1 The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you. 2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. 3 I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”
How many of you have read these verses? I’ve read all about how the Lord blessed Abram and promised to make him a great nation. I know that Abram had been hoping and praying for a child even though he and his wife were very old. The odds were stacked against Abram, and most of us would have finally accepted the fact that we were not going to be blessed with a child, but not Abram. The Lord saw his faith and blessed him. The Lord promised to make his name great and that Abram would be a blessing.
When reading these verses, I have focused on Abram’s faith. I’ve read these verses, and they are a great reminder to me to always have faith and to keep hoping and praying even when the odds are stacked against me. BUT, I have completely ignored verse 3 until now.
The Lord blessed Abram, and he blessed everyone on earth “through” him. I’m not Abram, but I do think that the same applies to all of us. We should use our blessings to bless others. I’m not necessarily talking about money since blessings come in many different ways.
If you’ve been blessed financially, then maybe you can bless others through donations. I have a couple of food charities that I like to donate to since they can reach people that I don’t know who are in need. If you’ve been blessed with health, then you might bless others through food, exercise, or by using your health to volunteer. If your blessing comes in the gift of explaining or understanding, then teaching is a way that you can bless others. Blessings come in such different forms that you might not even think of them as a blessing. Being good at math is a blessing, creative writing is a blessing, having a beautiful voice is a blessing, being a good cook or seamstress is a blessing, and all of these blessings can be used to bless others.
Take a few minutes today to thank the Lord for all of your blessings, and then ask Him to show you ways that you can be a blessing to others. Now, I need to find a new graphic shirt that says, Blessed To Be A Blessing!
