It doesn’t happen often, but I love it when the Lord hammers a message home to me. This week, I am getting the message to Dream Big even though it looks like nothing is happening. It all started when I listened to a sermon this week, and in his message, he talked about the tiny mustard seed. I almost clicked off the message because I’ve heard several hundred sermons about having faith the size of a mustard seed. I even wrote a post about having faith the size of a mustard seed. But this message was different, and I’m glad that I kept listening.
I’ve seen mustard seeds before, and they are tiny. The seeds that I’ve seen can produce a mustard plant that a lot of people grow in their gardens, so I didn’t see the big deal about mustard seeds. However, there is actually a mustard tree or bush that can grow up to 30ft tall. The mustard tree is actually one of the fastest-growing trees out there. What??? Am I the only one who didn’t know there was a mustard tree? The mustard seed analogy makes so much more sense when thought of as a tree instead of the tiny plant that produces pretty yellow flowers. I had always read Matthew 17:20 about having faith as small as a mustard seed, but I must have completely glossed over the verses in Matthew 13 about the tree.
Matthew 13:31-32
31 He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds come and perch in its branches.”
How many of us are living our lives like a mustard plant instead of a mustard tree? Are you content with the pretty yellow flowers when you could become a source of shade and a resource for others?
I was reading in Corinthians, where Paul wrote a letter to the church of Corinth, and he was asking the same thing of them.
2 Corinthians 6:11-13 (MSG)
11-13 Dear, dear Corinthians, I can’t tell you how much I long for you to enter this wide-open, spacious life. We didn’t fence you in. The smallness you feel comes from within you. Your lives aren’t small, but you’re living them in a small way. I’m speaking as plainly as I can and with great affection. Open up your lives. Live openly and expansively!
Wide open scares me; I almost prefer to have boundaries because that is where I feel comfortable. In theory, I want to dream big and living life to its fullest. That sounds wonderful and exciting, but it also sounds scary and unpredictable. I get caught up in the “what if” scenarios, and they can take me down a dark place instead of into the clouds.
While I was pondering this message, I opened up my Instagram, and this photo is what popped up.
The Lord didn’t want Sarah to only have a baby. He wanted her to dream big so that He could bless her with an entire nation. Can you even begin to comprehend what the Lord is capable of doing?

Matthew 17:20
20 He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.”
Now, go plant that mustard seed, and let’s grow a tree. Grow your faith, think and dream big, and wait to see what the Lord has planned for you.
