Ortonville VFW Post 582 honored local veterans at its Sixth Annual Purple Heart Program in August at the Brandon Township Library.
Ortonville VFW Post 582 members and Purple Heart recipients Duane Getzmeyer-Vietnam, Don Kengerski-Korea and Ron Allen-Vietnam were presented a flag that flew over the capitol and a certificate from Rep. Slotkin’s office, according to the VFW Post.
This year’s program honorees also included two local veterans who paid the ultimate price for their country and were awarded the Purple Heart. They are Vietnam veteran Melvin McArthur and Operation Enduring Freedom PFC Joseph A Miracle. McArthur was a friend and classmate of Vietnam veteran and VFW Post 582 Cmdr. Dennis Hoffman at Brandon High School. McArthur was killed in Vietnam by a roadside land mine returning from a mission.
Veteran Army Captain Justin Quisenberry talked about Joseph A. Miracle from Ortonville, who gave his life in Afghanistan in 2007. He was a machine-gunner and the convoy he was in was ambushed. Because of his heroic actions fending off the enemy, he paid the ultimate price and was awarded the Purple Heart. Miracle’s mother Judy Miracle, a Gold Star Mother, was in attendance.
Boy Scout Troop 139 performed a flag retirement ceremony at the end of the program.
