In this article, we take a look back at headlines from the spring of 1993 in Pulaski County. Despite the passing of 30 years, some of the issues we were dealing with back then remain relevant today. For example, we were already grappling with bomb threats in schools and mass shootings, while at the same time still debating traditionally contentious topics like guns on school property and secondhand smoke. Some other headlines from the Commonwealth Journal during that week include a fake bomb at PCHS leading to charges for a student, a magisterial candidate withdrawing from the election due to failure to meet residency requirements, and the former magistrate from Pulaski County’s 2nd District passing away. Additionally, the airport board gave approval for the construction of a 10,000-square-foot hangar at the Somerset-Pulaski County Airport, and the issue of adding a substation to the Science Hill Fire Department was discussed during a meeting of the City Commission. The Chair Factory, which had been plagued with problems for the past couple years, was auctioning off its woodworking equipment due to bankruptcy. Finally, the Blue-White craze had taken over Somerset-Pulaski County in support of the UK Wildcats basketball team, and the Sertoma Club was seeking to assist citizens in the area.
