MADISON, Wis. — Atwood Barbershop wants these price hikes from inflation to cut it out. Literally.
Jackieta Fairley is a hair stylist who works at Atwood Barbershop. She says she sees inflation affecting the haircut and beauty industry.
“I definitely felt it,” said Fairley. “With inflation, it has not only affected me but it’s affected my clients.”
Shae Sims says he experiences the same issues as a barber.
“We talked about raising the prices and stuff like that because everything costs more right now,” said
Fairley says supply chain shortages have played a role in making her job more difficult.
“Some of the places that you would normally go to get certain things don’t have them,” said Fairley. “Or you’ll get things and they’re more expensive than they were last time. You’re trying to add that into the price of your services, but you don’t want to go up too much because you’re trying to provide a service to the community.”
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, haircut prices were up 6.2% compared to a year earlier. That’s the largest annual increase since 1982.
Sims says it goes beyond just supply chain issues. The supplies they use at the barbershop where he works are already pretty expensive items.
“The clippers and stuff like that, they’re all at least $180-$200,” said Sims. “It all adds up after a while.”
The inflation issues come after a global pandemic nearly destroyed the haircut and beauty industry back in 2020.
“We were just getting to a slight normal and then things rack back up,” said Fairley. “Can we just get back to like a steady price wage where people are able to afford things?”
Sims says it’s an industry that’s struggling, but it’s dependent upon customers who continue to come back.
“People always need a haircut,” said Sims. “So they’re going to come in no matter what.”
