GDOFREY — A monarch butterfly spreads its wings on a plant near Glazebrook Park in Godfrey.
In July the butterflies were officially listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
It is estimated that over the last few decades their numbers have decreased from 20 to 90 percent. The colorful and highly recognizable species migrates thousands of miles each year in North America to winter in California and Mexico.
