F and I decided we needed a little break and found ourselves booking a staycation to Cornwall last month.
I spent a third of a decade at University in Devon and yet have never ventured that short skip and a jump south to the Cornish coast.
We chose Falmouth as our base, suitably central to visit neighbouring towns and villages.
At somewhat short notice we checked into what’s probably best described as a modern, nautical lodge (primarily chosen for it’s hottub on the balcony). It’s part of a larger, independent Cornish hotel which had all the look of ‘yesteryear’s heyday’ and faded grandeur, but in an endearing way as if plucked from the pages of Enid Blyton.
Our first evening treated us to a beautiful dreamscape over the harbour. I chose not to take my camera on this trip and iPhone photography certainly isn’t going to do it justice but it’s a taste.
I was keen to visit The Hidden Hut at Porthcurnick Beach, a glorified shack nestled among native Cornish fauna and quite a number of narrow steps..We made a pitstop of houmous and (obligatory) pasty overlooking the beach before racing down for a paddle in the shoreline.
A blustery but sun-drenched coastal path took us to an isolated bench out on the headland with panoramic views of sun, sea and surf.
Dinner, which turned out to be something worthy of remark, was served at The Idle Rocks, St Mawes.
To start, mushroom parfait and warm, toasty rolls with seaweed butter.
For mains I opted for butter-poached plaice (butter-poaching
improves anything) atop a crab risotto (full of crab and less of the
risotto I was pleased to discover), surrounded by a saffron veloute and
vegetables. Everything impeccably cooked.
F chose some local Cornish lamb accompanied by goat’s cheese agnolotti, wild garlic and asparagus.
Desserts.
Mine was their take on a raspberry Eton Mess; a really full-flavoured
raspberry sorbet and jelly, freeze-dried raspberry meringue shards,
fresh, plump, juicy raspberries and a creamy, Cornish clotted cream ice
cream.
F’s, their clotted cream custard tart, yoghurt sorbet and
fruity garnish. We actually ended up preferring one another’s (whilst
mine I think looks more impressive, the skill in the tart was apparent).
Back to our base via the sweet little King Harry car ferry for a soak in the hot tub and to see what tomorrow brings.
xx
