CLINTON, S.C. – Alongside the continued rise of a Blue Hose quartet all within the top four of their respective weight classes around the country, the Presbyterian College women’s wrestling team has maintained a spot they’ve been in since the start of the campaign just over one month ago, inside the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) top ten. Announced on Thursday afternoon, head coach Zach Shaeffer’s group clocks in at the #7 spot with 38 total points to their credit.
Four days back, the Blue Hose rolled in their brief home schedule in dominant fashion while hosting Mount Olive in a first-time matchup, leading to a 37-10 victory inside the Templeton Center to mark the fourth time in program history with back-to-back W’s inside dual competition. Accounting for a total point differential of 58 over their last two meetings (including a 41-10 drubbing at Limestone pre-Thanksgiving), Presbyterian has racked up 57 wins from 10 different grapplers, four of which sit among the upper echelon of their weight class with either a 3rd or 4th-place standing.
Sierra Marie Miller and Paige Wehrmeister have both entered the nation’s top three in the 130 and 136-lb. groups respectively after five events, the former staying put from the previous NWCA list and the latter moving up one spot behind a perfect 10-0 record. Those two have added up for a record of 20-3, ending with their hands raised in victory over their last 13 matches put together. All but two of Wehrmeister’s triumphs have occurred via technical fall, cementing herself as a force to be reckoned with only one month into her collegiate career.
Samantha Miller (101) and Ainslie Lane (116) round out PC’s four-headed representation in the individual national rankings, both checking in at 4th place. The former jumping up one spot while the latter stays her ground, the two have combined for 14 W’s (including a five-match winning streak for Lane that has spanned 32 days and counting).
While the Blue Hose dropped a mere one rung in the team rankings on Thursday, one wouldn’t know it from the squad’s play as of late, amassing back-to-back wins by 25 points or more beside nine top-four placements at a pair of early-season tournaments. Three PC performers have already clinched four championships wins at both the Princeton Open and “Eagle Madness” Life Open just one week apart, preparing to return to that multi-team format in their next date on December 18.
Participating in the WASP Open with Emory & Henry playing the role of the hosting party, Presbyterian looks for another strong showing in the Commonwealth State 10 days from now, serving as the final event on the schedule until the holiday season.
