If you’re a fan of musical theater, you likely have heard of Beauty and the Beast. This classic story of love and redemption has stood the test of time and has been adapted into many different mediums, including a beloved Disney animated film and a hit Broadway musical.
Belmont University’s Musical Theatre program recently added its own production of the show to the mix, and it did not disappoint. Directed by David Shamburger, Beauty and the Beast features a cast of tremendously gifted performers who bring the beloved characters to life with impressive vocal and acting performances.
Sierra Fermin and Maya Kaempf alternate in the lead role of Belle, and both are exceptional in their portrayal of the spirited and independent heroine. Sowalksie delivers a commanding performance as the Beast, capturing the character’s fierce charm and the complexity of his journey from cursed prince to redeemed hero.
The supporting cast also shines, particularly Patrick Dunbar as the arrogant Gaston and Chamberlin Little as his hilariously devoted sidekick LeFou. Josh Jordan is a standout as the suave candelabra Lumiere, and Leah Spurlock delivers a moving rendition of the show’s iconic title song as Mrs. Potts.
Anna Perry’s choreography is superb, particularly in the dazzling “Be Our Guest” number, and Nate Strasser’s musical direction brings sophistication and professionalism to the production. The design elements, including Richard Davis’ lighting, Melissa Durmon’s costumes, and the top-notch audio and sound effects, also contribute to the show’s overall appeal.
Overall, Belmont University’s production of Beauty and the Beast is a triumph, showcasing the program’s exceptional talent and commitment to producing top-quality musical theatre. Whether you are a longtime fan of the show or a newcomer to its enchanting tale, this production is not to be missed.
