Located in California, Lodi is renowned for producing some of America’s most loved grapes, with approximately 20% of California’s wine grapes being sourced from this region, according to the Lodi Winegrape Commission. However, there is more to Lodi than just wine. This hidden gem is also a prime destination for outdoor recreation, temperate weather, and natural beauty.
To start your Lodi journey, check into Wine & Roses, a locally-owned resort hotel with rooms nestled in jungle-like surroundings. The hotel boasts stunningly beautiful grounds with overflowing hydrangeas in every hue, canopies of trees, leafy ferns, and fountains. On the property, you will find the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center. This center provides the opportunity to learn about and taste regional wines without needing to leave your resort. For excellent food, you don’t have to go far. Just steps outside of your room, grab a coffee, fresh pastries, and sandwiches at the Towne Corner Café & Market. The resort’s Town House Restaurant is also open for weekend brunch, lunch, and dinner, and alongside the adjoining bar, it offers fine dining and hand-crafted cocktails. You will be entranced by the sounds as you tour the property, from the parrots that say hello as you walk by, to the splash of water just outside your spa treatment room, to the live music serving as a backdrop to the spirited atmosphere in the bar. The resort also offers special events throughout the year, with their Easter Brunch kicking-off spring in style.
Wine & Roses is just a short drive away from the many activities to be explored in Lodi. To dip your toes and your paddles into picturesque Lodi Lake, kayaking or paddleboarding your way through the beautiful lagoons is a must. Headwaters Kayak will hook you up with classes and everything you need to see the waterbird life, tall grasses, turtles sunning on rocks and stunning home surrounding the lake and its lagoons. Don’t miss the 8th annual Paddlefest on April 15 when you can bring the whole family to enjoy food trucks, live music, and all the watersports you can handle.
Exploring the region by bike is also a must-do. Rent bikes from local shops like Lodi Cyclery, both avid cyclists and casual riders will enjoy taking a spin on routes that can challenge or are a pure breeze. Choose your route, set your course, and get some exercise while absorbing the stunning scenery of Lodi. You can even bike through wine country and arrive at Oak Farm Vineyards, a truly gorgeous estate that will leave you feeling refreshed.
When seeking tranquility, the Micke Grove Japanese Garden is a must-visit. This secret hideaway beckons you across its red arched bridge to meander along a babbling brook, where waterfalls splash into a koi fish pond. Follow the stepping stones around the stone lanterns, and stop to appreciate the maple trees bursting through the sea of lush, green landscape.
Wine tasting is also a must in Lodi. To sample a multiplicity of grapes, visit the eclectic Michael David Winery, which offers wine for varying tastes. To savor a variety of white wines, Acquiesce Winery & Vineyards is a must-do. Their small-batch productions of Roussanne 2020 and Grenache Blanc 20202 have won Best of Class awards, and their Clairette Blanche and double gold medal 2021 Belle Blanc are divine. Bokisch Vineyards, overlooking the vines and sunset, made an Alberiño lover out of me.
In summary, Lodi is not just a wine destination. This hidden gem is perfect for those who enjoy the great outdoors, tranquility, and natural beauty. With its central location, Wine & Roses makes it easy for visitors to get to everything Lodi has to offer. From water activities and cycling to Japanese gardens and wine tasting, Lodi has something special to offer everyone.
