In the world of musical theater, one show has proven to be a timeless classic that audiences can’t get enough of: Beauty and the Beast. The show, which is based on the classic French story by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont, has been adapted into various forms over the years, from the 1991 Disney animated film to the hit stage musical that debuted on Broadway just a few years later.
Now, in 2023, we have another Beauty and the Beast production to add to the list: Belmont University Musical Theatre’s version, which finally gives audiences a chance to see the show performed by some of the country’s most talented performers. And the results are outstanding.
Directed by David Shamburger and with superb musical direction by Nate Strasser and exuberant choreography by Anna Perry, BUMT’s Beauty and the Beast is a triumph, featuring a tremendously capable cast of actors who’ve honed their skills to deliver a show that rivals national touring companies. The production, which featured four performances during the weekend of March 24-26, left audiences spellbound and with a sense of wonder and enchantment that is the hallmark of the show.
The cast, which is led by Noah Sowalskie as the Beast, Patrick Dunbar as Gaston, Chamberlin Little as LeFou, and Josh Jordan as Lumiere, along with Sierra Fermin and Maya Kaempf alternating in the role of Belle, is nothing short of exceptional. Maya Kaempf brings a captivating presence to her portrayal of Belle, while Sowalskie gives a fiercely commanding performance as the Beast.
Other standouts include Simon Elliott as Belle’s bumbling inventor father Maurice and the domestic staff at the Beast’s castle, with Josh Jordan as Lumiere, Dylan Pearson as Cogsworth, Maddie Heckler as Babette, and Kathryn Crandall as Madame de la Bouche all delivering terrific performances.
The large ensemble who bring the show to vibrant life, particularly during the big spectacular musical numbers that make Beauty and the Beast so appealing, give every indication that we have much to look forward to in future seasons with Belmont University Musical Theatre.
Anna Perry’s elaborate choreography is beautifully performed, providing the audience with much to applaud, while Nate Strasser’s musical direction of his 17-member orchestra lends an air of sophistication and professionalism that is the hallmark of BUMT shows.
Overall, Beauty and the Beast at Belmont University Musical Theatre is a must-see production that will leave audiences enchanted and wanting more. The show is a testament to the power of live theater and a reminder of why this classic tale continues to captivate audiences year after year.
