In a recent interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Jennifer Garner was asked about any beauty advice she would pass down to her daughters.
Garner says, “My beauty advice is always the same: Look in the mirror less, obsess less, and look at the rest of the world to see what you could be using your time for instead.”
Jennifer Garner has two teenage daughters, Violet, 16, and Seraphina, 13, whom she shares, along with her son, Samuel Garner Affleck, with her ex-husband, Ben Affleck.
“We all look at our faces more than people used to, and it doesn’t do you any good. You obsess over changes or how to fix something on your face,” she adds.
It sounds so simple and, yet, pretty genius? In a time where social media feeds are overwhelmingly curated with picture-perfect content, this is the wholesome kind of advice I think we all need.
“My advice is to look at the mirror less and be cautious when it comes to injecting anything into your face. Be very, very incredibly judicious and wait as absolutely long as possible to add anything,” she continues.
“You don’t need to wear so much makeup or have such a constant blowout.”
Even though there is a lot of pressure for women to always be “on”—hair done, full makeup, nails polished—Garner’s advice is a breath of fresh air.
And if you’re wondering whether this is the first time she has given such magical advice, it’s not. In 2021, Garner talked about those moments when we feel less than our best and what we should do about it.
“When you start getting super critical of yourself, turn around, pivot in that spot and go do something nice for someone else,” she said. “Or go work out, or just take that and make it active instead of letting it just fester in you.”
Of course, we all have our own cult-favorite beauty products, regimens and routines we swear by. But the tried and true simple beauty advice passed down through the generations, shared wisdom from mother to daughter—that’s priceless.
