In 1991, Disney debuted their classic animated film, Beauty and the Beast, and it quickly became a beloved classic among theater aficionados. As time passed, the idea of this beloved fairy tale being adapted into a live stage musical became a prevalent topic of discussion among critics and fans alike. In 1994, that dream became a reality when Beauty and the Beast was brought to Broadway, featuring all eight songs from the movie, composed by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as six new songs written by Menken and Tim Rice, with a libretto by Linda Woolverton based on her own screenplay.
Despite initial mixed reviews, the musical quickly became a fan favorite, going on to have an initial run of over 5,000 performances over 13 years. Beauty and the Beast has also been a success on the road, touring internationally and being performed by theater companies of all kinds, from professional to community to academic.
In 2023, Belmont University Musical Theatre treated audiences to its own version of Beauty and the Beast, directed by David Shamburger, with musical direction by Nate Strasser and choreography by Anna Perry. The show featured a talented cast of actors, including Noah Sowalskie as the Beast, Patrick Dunbar as Gaston, Chamberlin Little as LeFou, and Josh Jordan as Lumiere. Sierra Fermin and Maya Kaempf shared the role of Belle.
In our review of the show, we were impressed with the entire cast and the level of professionalism and skill they brought to the stage. Maya Kaempf’s portrayal of Belle was particularly noteworthy, with her spirited and independent take on the character, accompanied by wonderful vocals. Sowalskie showcased his leading man talents as the Beast, and Dunbar perfectly embodied the arrogant and smarmy Gaston. The rest of the talented cast, including Elliott as Maurice and Spurlock as Mrs. Potts, held their own and brought their characters to life in a truly captivating way.
The musical numbers were a highlight of the show, with Anna Perry’s choreography providing vibrant energy and Nate Strasser’s orchestral direction lending a sophisticated air to the musical arrangements. The set design, lighting, sound effects, and costumes were all top-notch and added to the overall theatrical experience.
After watching Belmont University Musical Theatre’s Beauty and the Beast, we are excited to see what future productions they have in store. The talented cast and creative team proved their ability to bring this classic tale to life in a beautiful and enchanting way, leaving audiences enamored and entertained.
