In 1991, the world was introduced to Disney’s magical tale of Beauty and the Beast in its animated film version. It was an instant classic loved by audiences of all ages. It wasn’t long after the film’s release that the theater world began buzzing with the possibility of bringing this enchanting story to life on stage.
In 1994, Beauty and the Beast made its Broadway debut. Featuring all eight beloved songs from the movie, written by Alan Menken and Howard Ashman, as well as six additional songs by Menken and Tim Rice, and a libretto by Linda Woolverton, the show was met with mixed reviews at first. However, it quickly became a fan favorite, running for over 5,000 performances over 13 years.
Since its Broadway debut, Beauty and the Beast has been performed by theater companies all over the world. In 2023, Belmont University Musical Theatre finally offered its own stunning production of the show. Directed by David Shamburger, with musical direction by Nate Strasser and choreography by Anna Perry, this production was a true spectacle.
With a talented cast led by Noah Sowalskie as the Beast, Patrick Dunbar as Gaston, Chamberlin Little as LeFou, and Josh Jordan as Lumiere, and Sierra Fermin and Maya Kaempf alternating in the role of Belle, this Beauty and the Beast did not disappoint. Maya Kaempf delivered a stunning portrayal of Belle, capturing the character’s spirit and singing the role with confidence and artistry.
Noah Sowalskie gave a commanding performance as the Beast, conveying both his fierceness and his vulnerability. Patrick Dunbar perfectly embodied the arrogant Gaston, and Chamberlin Little was a delightful comedic presence as LeFou.
In addition to the strong main cast, the ensemble brought the show to vibrant life with Anna Perry’s elaborate choreography, particularly during big musical numbers like “Be Our Guest” and “Gaston.” The orchestral score, led by Nate Strasser, lent an air of sophistication and professionalism to the production.
The design elements were equally impressive, with Richard Davis’ lighting illuminating each scene and Melissa Durmon’s costumes providing a visual feast. The audio design and sound effects by Christopher Bangos and Ivan Sobek added to the overall enchantment of the production.
Belmont University Musical Theatre’s production of Beauty and the Beast was a triumph, entertaining audiences of all ages with its wonder and charm. With a cast and crew this talented, it’s no wonder Belmont is known for producing some of the most talented performers in musical theater.
