The Latest Accolades of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts Alumni
The awards season in Hollywood is always an exciting time for fans of movies and television shows. It’s a recognition of the hard work and dedication of individuals who worked behind the scenes to bring our favorite characters to life. Among those talented people are the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts cast and crew alumni.
This year’s 95th Academy Awards was no exception, and several alumnae were in attendance as Oscar nominees. While none of the alumni went home with a direct win, there were a few who were represented in victories for select films. Among them was Samantha Morton, who played Mary Lou Barebone in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. She starred in The Whale, which won in the Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Makeup and Hairstyling categories.
Another success story was Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, which featured David Bradley as Argus Filch, Ron Perlman as Gnarlack, and the musical stylings of Alexandre Desplat. It won the Best Animated Feature Film award.
The Critics Choice Super Awards was also filled with several alumni successes. The Batman, which starred Robert Pattinson as Cedric Diggory, Zoë Kravitz as Leta Lestrange, and Colin Farrell as Percival Graves, won both the Best Superhero Movie and Best Actor in a Superhero Movie awards. Farrell also took home an individual award for his portrayal of The Penguin.
In the horror category, Ralph Fiennes, who played Lord Voldemort, won the Best Actor in a Horror Movie award for his performance in The Menu. Andor, which starred Fiona Shaw as Petunia Dursley, tied with Stranger Things, featuring Jamie Campbell Bower as teenage Gellert Grindelwald, for the award for Best Science Fiction/Fantasy Series, Limited Series, or Made-For-TV Movie.
The upcoming Irish Film & Television Academy is also set to give recognition to several Wizarding World hopefuls. The film The Banshees of Inisherin will be hoping for awards in several categories, including Best Film, Director, Script, Costume Design, Hair & Makeup, Sound, and VFX. Colin Farrell is also in the running for the Lead Actor award, while Brendan Gleeson as Alastor Moody is contending for the Supporting Actor category with Barry Keoghan.
Another Irish film that saw multiple nominations was The Dry, which stars Ciarán Hinds as Aberforth Dumbledore. The series is nominated in the drama category for Best Drama.
For fans of the late Richard Harris, The Ghost of Richard Harris will be competing for the George Morrison Feature Documentary Award. The documentary chronicles the remarkable actor’s storied existence, including his portrayal of Albus Dumbledore in the first two Potter films.
Other nominees include Dylan McCormack for Lead Actor in Film in Good Luck to You, Leo Grande, which stars Emma Thompson as Sybill Trelawney; The Fabelmans, whose score was composed by John Williams, for Best International Film; Enola Holmes 2 for the Costume Design Category featuring Helena Bonham Carter as Bellatrix Lestrange and David Thewlis as Remus Lupin; Death on the Nile featuring Kenneth Branagh as Gilderoy Lockhart and Dawn French as the Fat Lady and scored by Patrick Doyle, for the Editing category; and finally, Stranger Things, which is contending for the VFX category.
The upcoming BAFTA Television Awards also announced several nominations. Among them, Ian Hart, who played Quirinus Quirrell, was nominated for his starring role in The Responder, while Dame Helena Bonham Carter received a nomination for The House.
Additionally, Gary Oldman, who starred as Sirius Black, is up for Leading Actor for his work in the thriller series Slow Horses. Imelda Staunton, who played Dolores Umbridge, is also nominated for Leading Actress for her outstanding portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in The Crown. Daniel Radcliffe, who played Harry Potter himself, was recognized for his exceptional role in the comedy program Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.
It’s safe to say that the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts alumni have once again made a mark in the awards season. Here’s to hoping for more recognition in the future!
